Shower Head Clogged? Here’s How to Clean It Like a Pro

by Fayyaz Azam 28 Aug 2025

You spent money on a beautiful shower space, stocked it with your favorite body wash and hair masks, and even installed mood lighting for those relaxing evenings. But what happens when your peaceful shower turns into a frustrating drizzle? That gentle water flow you used to enjoy suddenly becomes uneven, weak, or shoots off in strange directions. No, it's not your water pressure. It’s most likely your shower head.

Over time, shower heads collect mineral deposits and soap residue that block the water holes. It happens more often than we think, especially if you live in an area with hard water. But here’s the good news: you don’t need to replace it or call in a plumber. With just a few things from your kitchen or cleaning cabinet, you can fix this yourself and get that spa-like water flow back.

Let’s show you exactly how to clean a clogged shower head like a pro – the easy way.

Why Your Shower Head Gets Clogged?

If your shower feels weak, your shower head is likely full of gunk. When hard water evaporates, it leaves behind calcium and magnesium. Add soap residue to that, and you’ve got a recipe for clogged nozzles. These mineral build-ups block the tiny holes in the shower head, leading to poor water flow.

What Do You Need To Clean It?

Before we get into the methods, here are a few common tools and ingredients you might use:

  • White vinegar

  • Baking soda

  • Citric acid (optional)

  • A plastic bag

  • Twist tie or rubber band

  • An old toothbrush

  • Scrubber sponge

  • Calcium, Lime & Rust Remover (if needed)

  • Bowl (for soaking)

Method 1: Vinegar Soak with the Shower Head Attached

This is one of the easiest methods and doesn’t require removing your shower head.

Step-by-step:

  1. Fill a plastic bag with equal parts white vinegar and water.

  2. Secure the bag around the shower head using a twist tie or rubber band. Make sure the nozzles are completely submerged.

  3. Let it soak for at least 30 minutes. For more stubborn clogs, let it sit for a few hours.

  4. Once soaked, remove the bag and scrub the nozzles gently with a toothbrush or sponge.

  5. Turn on the shower to flush out loosened debris with hot water.

Pro Tip: Be careful with high-end finishes like polished brass. Don’t soak those longer than an hour.

Method 2: Vinegar and Baking Soda Paste

This method works well if you want to scrub the head directly.

How to do it:

  1. Mix baking soda and vinegar into a paste.

  2. Apply the paste to the shower head, especially around the nozzles.

  3. Let it sit for 10–20 minutes.

  4. Scrub with a sponge or old toothbrush.

  5. Rinse thoroughly with hot water.

This combination helps break down buildup without any harsh chemicals.

Method 3: Citric Acid Soak

Citric acid is a great natural alternative. It works like vinegar but has a gentler smell.

Steps:

  1. Dissolve citric acid powder in warm water (about 2 tablespoons per cup).

  2. Soak the shower head using the plastic bag method or in a bowl if it’s removed.

  3. Leave for 30 minutes to an hour.

  4. Rinse and scrub away any remaining residue.

Method 4: Deep Cleaning with Calcium, Lime & Rust Remover (CLR)

If regular cleaning doesn’t work, it might be time for something stronger. CLR is made to tackle heavy mineral buildup. You can clean the shower head with or without removing it.

Option 1: Remove the Shower Head

  1. Take off the shower head.

  2. Mix equal parts CLR and water in a bowl.

  3. Soak for 2–3 minutes. You’ll see foaming – that means it’s working.

  4. Scrub with a toothbrush.

  5. Rinse with cold water.

  6. Reattach.

Option 2: Leave the Shower Head On

  1. Mix a 50/50 CLR and water solution in a bowl.

  2. Hold the bowl under the shower head so it’s submerged.

  3. Soak for 2–3 minutes.

  4. Scrub with an old toothbrush.

  5. Empty and refill the bowl with clean cold water.

  6. Soak again for 2 minutes.

  7. Run the shower on cold to flush it.

Note: Repeat this process monthly if you live in a hard water area to maintain water pressure and keep the shower head sparkling.

Don’t Forget the Filter Screen

Some shower heads have a filter screen inside. If you've cleaned the outside and still see poor flow, it might be time to check the screen.

  1. Remove the shower head.

  2. Use needle-nose pliers to gently pull out the screen.

  3. Rinse it under water and scrub off any buildup.

  4. Put it back and reattach the shower head.

Things to Avoid

  • Bleach: It can damage your shower head, especially chrome finishes.

  • Soaking Too Long: For luxury finishes, over-soaking can lead to discoloration.

  • Skipping Rinse: Always flush out any cleaning solution completely.

A Quick Note on Alternatives

Apple cider vinegar can be used instead of white vinegar, but it’s not as effective and more expensive. Stick to white vinegar for the best results.

Final Thoughts

A clogged shower head doesn’t mean your bathroom is falling apart. It just needs a little care. Taking a few minutes to clean it regularly can make a big difference in how your showers feels and how your bathroom looks. Think of it like giving your beauty space the refresh it deserves.

Let your shower be a part of your self-care, not your stress. Clean it once a month, and enjoy that powerful, calming stream the way it was meant to be.
